Computers were (are?) the "hot rod" of my generation. I was
fortunate enough to go through my teen age years with the birth of
the PC age and to actually own one of the first computers on the
market for home use. (TRS-80 Color Computer). During my father's
teenage years he was "tuning" cars to go faster. During MY
teenage years I was busy trying to find faster sort algorithms
and ways to speed transmissions over my "lightning fast"
300 baud modem. I think you'll find most "self professed
technophiles" (geeks) spent their teenage years in a similar
fashion.
As our parents have done, those in my generation have settled into
our careers. Some of us did not pursue technology careers while
some of us (such as myself) did. Just as some of those old school
"car nuts" ended up in the automotive industry doing what they
love, I too have ended up in a career doing what I love. The
situation is a bit different in a career then in a hobby; the
priorities and pressures are a bit different. It's still fun
however and it is great to be part of something which has so
drastically changed the world. It is exciting to try and
speculate about what my children's "hot rod" will be!
Below are the computers I use on a daily basis. I use them for
development, data management, document processing and the
occasional game. :-) (The only games I ever play anymore are
NASCAR simulators and even then I only have enough time to start
them up once or twice per month!)
