2005 -Tennessee ("The volunteer state") Chattanooga has become a favorite "weekend destination" for my family. We typically take day-trips to Chattanooga. Some of the places that we've visited the most are: The Chattanooga Aquarium, Rock City, or Ruby Falls. When we get bored with these tourist locations we typically explore the historic areas of Chattanooga itself. These destinations are also extremely popular with guests when they come to visit my home. Since Chattanooga is only about two hours from my home it's easy to get to. There is an added bonus to visiting Chattanooga: They have a fantastic Chinese buffet restaurant. I forget the name of it, but it's easy to get to just as you are leaving the city right before you get on I-75 South.
Memphis (2004) - I've been to Memphis a few times on Airport visits, but most recently I spent the night there. My flight was cancelled due to bad weather out of Atlanta. They were able to put me on the next connecting flight the following day. As such, I found a hotel which just happened to be just up the road from Graceland. Unfortunately I didn't have any time to visit the house of Elvis, but at least I know where it is now so maybe I'll return.
Bristol (many times) - The Bristol Motor Speedway is Mecca to NASCAR fans. My annual "guys weekend" trip is to make the pilgrimage to Bristol with my best friend from NJ. I typically fly up to NJ and we drive down. (It would be the same distance to drive from Atlanta, but then we wouldn't have the same bonding experience.)
In 2005 we had a great time, although I wish I didn't go this year. I had just returned from California, I saw my mom for about 15 minutes and I headed out the door from work. After work, I flew up to NJ to spend time with my friend Dennis. By the time I got home my mother had already headed out the door for Alabama. She wanted to go to the hospital and get some headaches checked out. She passed away shortly thereafter and I never got to see her again. I'm not sure if I'll ever forgive myself for not being home with her during her last few days.
